Anyone who works in an office or who has worked in an office at some stage in their lives is going to really enjoy this film.
For those of you who haven't, here's the scenario: you tend to get a rather peculiar bunch of people working in offices, and even if they're not when they start, they become very peculiar the longer they stay there. So is the essence of "Office Space", satirising the office environment (not unlike TV show's such as "The Office" but that came much later than this film) in a highly amusing way, and giving us the ultimate fantasy of sticking it to the boss and walking out free as a bird.
Peter's boss is the inept kind of supervisor you'd like to destroy with your bare hands but ultimately, just like anyone who works in an office would know, you just talk about them behind your back. Bosses pretend to be nice only to save face; and Peter's boss is about one of the most non-genuine, hopeless people you're likely to come across. Then there's the office crowd, who have been entrenched in their jobs for so long that when a review is conducted to determine where cuts can be made (the major plot device in the film), they're so hopelessly dependent on their jobs and afraid of what might happen if they lose their jobs that everyone goes ballistic.
As Peter says, "Every day since I started work has been the worst day of my life."
When the review begins with two outside consultants, and after a bizarre counselling session with his girlfriend, Peter does what we all wish we could do: he tell the boss where to go, dresses casually, only shows up to work when he wants to, and starts enjoying more recreational activities whenever he wants. He dumps his agonising girlfriend and hooks up with the cute waitress where he gets his coffee from every day. Ironically, the outside consultants see him as a trail-blazer and decide that he needs a promotion! Peter takes this with a grain of salt, and continues on his merry way.
With two of his colleagues, Peter devises a computer program to cipher minute amounts of funds from the company's accounts ("it's from Superman 3"). When they end up with more money than they bargained for, everything changes. But through an hilarious chain of events, they all get off scott free, but not before Peter has changed jobs working at a construction site: "I'm getting fresh air, exercise, it doesn't get any better!"
This film is an enjoyable romp, and should entertain anyone, but those who work in an office will get the biggest kick out of it.
