HBO's Taking Chance - DVD Review

Taking Chance is an HBO film made as a tribute to Lance Corporal Chance Phelps who was killed in action in Iraq last April 9, 2009. First it was only an account by Lieutenant Colonel's Michael Strobl about LCpl Chance Phelp's death to his final resting in Wyoming.

It was a very heartfelt account, taking into consideration everything that a young man should be. The account generally was nothing I've ever read before, better than any movie script I've ever read, and LCpl Chance Phelps braver than any soldier portrayed in any war film.

HBO's Taking Chance takes us to the heroic death of Chance Phelps and how much impact he has left to Michael Strobl and eventually to those people who have read his account. According to Chance's mother, HBO stayed true to Strobl's accounts and didn't glorify anything to be worthy of a movie.

Kevin Bacon stars in the movie as Lt. Cl. Michael Strobl, and the film was chosen for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Taking Chance has received positive reviews so far, and for a made-for-TV movie, it is a socially conscious movie, treated with just the right amount of drama to portray the events following the death of LCpl Chance Phelps.

What I like about the movie is that it gives the audience a glimpse of the heroic deed of LCpl Chance Phelps without making him look like a saint, and without glorifying what happened in Iraq. The movie is also apolitical in that it doesn't dwell on Iraq War. Overall, HBO's Taking Chance is a success for me.
